JACOB HOPKINSJacob is part of a powerful and wealthy Bostonian family that can trace their ancestry back to Stephen Hopkins, one of the men who signed the American Declaration of Independence. He was educated at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and upon graduating joined the army. During the American Civil War he was appointed to the rank of Colonel and fought at the Battle of Fredericksburg.
Jacob Hopkins intends to rule Dominion Creek and is ready to crush anyone who stands in his way. He is a powerful man, who achieves his ends through shrewdness. He embodies the capitalist ideals of the late 19th century robber barons and feels that neither society’s rules nor the basic laws of human decency need apply to him. If Hopkins has a basic drive beyond self interest, it is to control everything around him - from the lucrative gambling and trading revenue in Dominion to the gold that is being dug out of the ground. Jacob Hopkins believes that by the ‘natural order of things’ this wealth is his. He is no stranger to bloodshed but prefers to let others do his dirty work for him.
Jacob understands the potential the discovery of gold in the Klondike has to radically alter the US economy. Hopkins owns the Golden Nugget Saloon in Dawson City and has sent his son, JJ, to run the establishment and buy up claims in the surrounding gold fields.
